Place of Safety

Seasoned child protection worker Amy Malloy knows that it's better for families to remain intact. She also knows that sometimes the risk is too high and it's in the best interests of the children to be moved, temporarily or otherwise, to a place of safety. 

When Amy places the Nelson children with their maternal aunt after their mother dies of an overdose, she neglects to conduct the search that would reveal the children's connection to their deceased father's Indigenous community. When she moves young Timmy Rankin from foster care into a placement with his aunt and uncle that is moving toward adoption, she learns just how unsafe placements can be for children.

Meanwhile, at home Amy and her partner Evan are learning how to parent young Justin, whose mother appointed Amy as Justin's guardian on her death. Just when they seem to be hitting their stride in family life, Evan is assigned to a police investigation that ends tragically and leaves him grappling with sever symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.
